The Help

This weekend I got the chance to FINALLY watch 'The Help'. A film I have been dying to watch for a looooong time after seeing so many great reviews about it and seeing one of the ladies win a golden globe for her performance! And I must say I enjoyed everything about the film it was heart-warming, funny and interesting the whole way through!

For those who haven't heard of this film or don't know what it is about, This film is set in Civil Rights era America in the early 1960's. It follows a young journalist, Eugenia 'Skeeter' Phelan (Emma Stone), who after witnessing her friends and neighbours treating their black maids disrespectively decides to write a book called 'The Help' which will share the point of view of the maids.

At first none of the maids want to help Skeeter with her book as they are scared of not only losing their jobs but also scared of the consequences of speaking out after seeing their own being abused and imprisoned all the time. Eventually one maid, Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis), decides to share her stories with Skeeter followed closely by Aibileen's friend, Minny (Octavia Spencer).

Of course there is always a bad guy who attempts to ruin it for everyone and in 'The Help' we get the villain in the form of socialite Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard). A woman who has a proposed bill to provide seperate bathrooms for the black help as she believes that they 'carry different diseases' to white people. Most of the white community agree with Hilly and ignore the discriminative acts toward the black community.

Dallas Howard is perfect as Hilly Holbrook giving the film the ultimate villain that you just want to slap for being so rude and disrespectful to people who are basically raising her children for her as she socialises and keeps up the housewife image.

Octavia Spencer won the golden globe for Best Supporting Actress for 'The Help' and she totally deserved it her performance as Minny was fantastic and she had such a funny and lovable character. But I believe that the real star of the film was Viola Davis. She was beautiful and had a warmth about her that just made the film even more enjoyable.

Now for the lovely Emma Stone. I was never really a fan of Emma Stone but after watching 'The Help' and also 'Crazy Stupid Love' this year she is really starting to grow on me and I look forward to seeing more of her in films. Emma is very sweet in this film and her character makes you want to stand up and make a difference once the film has ended!

If you haven't seen 'The Help' yet I highly recommend watching it! Especially if you are a sucker for a good heart-warming and empowering film!

Now I need to go out and buy the book I think! :D
